It’s the ‘Girls in STEM’ outreach scheme’s 6th year and our back in schools!

Over the last 5 years WISE has made it our mission to make science and engineering accessible to young people through after-school clubs for high school pupils. By volunteering, you’re joining an amazing team which strives to create visible role models to students with the aim of inspiring future generations – ‘you can’t be what you can’t see’.

A UoB student? Become a Volunteer!
Get hands-on science communication experience and help inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Become a volunteer now to get involved, run your own sessions and work with young people in Selly Oak! Full training will be provided via zoom and we’ll also provide all the necessary equipment for you to run fun, engaging experiments.
Students of all genders, years and subjects are invited to take part. Plus, volunteering is a great addition to your CV and you only need to be free one afternoon!
During this time, outreach will take place in a reduced format so that volunteers and students are as safe as possible. There are two types of outreach you can sign up for: in person and virtual!
What are the sessions like?
In person: these sessions will go ahead in schools as ‘normal’ but with social distancing rules in place. 2-3 volunteers will run a session for a maximum of 20 students. Some of these sessions will be “show and tell” in which volunteers will demonstrate an experiment, distribute worksheets and chat to students. Other sessions will allow students to complete their own experiment, guided by our volunteers. As well as full training and equipment, volunteers that go to schools will be provided with hand sanitiser, disinfectant wipes and visors!
Typical sessions: Bath-bomb making (acids and bases), Egg drop (Forces), Lava Lamps (Density and hydrophilic/phobic solutions)
Virtual: these sessions will be used to create virtual demos to be shown in our local schools and to be uploaded to our website for students to watch and follow in a safe environment! Full training and equipment will be provided, plus you’ll work with our outreach officers to record a short video of the demonstration.
